Aiming to make running fun

NYAL at Stoke on Sunday 8 May
Young AthletesThe team travelled to Stoke to endure several hail stone storms and a few heavy showers. The wind was fairly strong and assisted the sprinters but made times for 400m upwards meaningless....

The host club presented athlete of the match awards. A track and a field award are made to both genders. Some confusion has been created over the host clubs nominations. Clearly on the day Tony Hillier exceeded the BU15 grade 1 standard of 2.90 when he cleared 3.80m.. Sarah Smart achieved a grade 2 in the LU17 triple Jump with 10.23m. Neither had the pleasure of collecting deserved awards.

Hayley Pitman achieved three wins with excellent performances in the 80m H 12.1, 300m H 47.1 and High Jump 1.60. Eve Lockett won the B string triple jump in her first TJ competition having run well in the 800m.

It is a team effort and every point counts in the end but other significant performances came from Under 17s Chris Knight 800/HJ, Ben Robinson 1500, Joel Hartley and Rob Whitham LJ/TJ,      Bu15s  Adam Taylor, Joe O'Sullivan and Lewis Hield sprints; Cameron Walker Shepherd PV and James Preston and Matthew Dew in the throws. BU13s  Andrew Mattis LJ/HJ and Sam Bedwell 800 and Jack Thompson 1500.

LU17 Christina Jones and Christie Lazenby featured in the relays as well as achieving good performances in the throws.  UNder 15 girls were exemplified by the efforts of Lucy Taylor, Grace Copplestone and Rachel Pitman who did well in a range of events. Jo Chart had the distinction of being alone in winning a GU 15 event.

GU13 include newcomer Sophie Ward who along with Henrietta Worthington and Annie Walker-Trafford experienced the NYAL for the first time.

Results from two of the three other matches in the Premier Division also suffered from scoring problems. After one match Bristol & West  is equal 12th in the division of 18 clubs. The bottom six clubs are due to be relegated.

The next Premier Division match in the UKA National Young Athletes League is at Tipton on Sunday 5 June 2005.  This match will be against Nottingham ( 1st ), Royal Sutton Coldfield ( 7th ), Halesowen ( 14th ) and Tipton ( 18th ). The figures in brackets are positions after the first match but last year we finished ahead of RSC and Tipton at Neath. RSC were very weakened on that occasion due to holidays.
