 | Athletics Round Up |
Weekly athletics round up courtesy of The Bristol Evening Post and The Green Un.
THE Reed sisters enjoyed a double victory in the Clevedon Boxing Day four miles road race. The Bristol and West athletes, who live in the seaside town, both enjoyed 'home' wins with elder sister Kate retaining her senior women's title and Emma finishing first female in the young athletes' race. The men's race was won by James Thie, who out-sprinted Martin Hula of Bristol and West AC. "I have waited a long time for this one and I have finally done it," said a delighted Thie. "I led from start to finish but I couldn't shake off Martin Hula, who sat on my shoulder all the way. "I thought that if I messed it up today I would never win it so I was cautious really and threw the clock away and didn't worry about the time. "I knew Martin had won it three times before - including the first senior race I ever did in 1995 - and it is funny nine years on his still hanging in there and I was able to beat him. "I'm absolutely thrilled." The victory also delighted the organiser Andy Heyes, coming on top of another record-breaking entry for the event which is supported by Clevedon DIY Centre. "It was an unbelievable day with James winning at last much to everyone's delight and record fields in the seniors with 730 finishers and 105 in the young athletes event," said Heyes. Top veteran was Bristol and West's Phil Parry, who finished fourth overall well clear of Martin Shore and Mark Cowen. Third place in the women's race went to Bristol and West's Sian Monahan, who also scooped the veterans' prize. Overall victory in the young athletes' 3k race went to Westbury Harrier Harry Webb, who clipped seven seconds off Kieron Leeson's course record set two years ago. Bristol and West's Nick Todd also dipped under the old record in second place with Martin Dunkley third.
