Aiming to make running fun

NYAL Midland Div 1, Sun 18th May
Bristol and West AC NewsAn emphatic win was achieved with an excellent team events points score.

Athletes achieved 64 winning performances, 39 second places and just a handful of 3rds and 4ths. Many events were keenly contested but the numerical strength of the team and enthusiasm to compete in extra events was crucial.

James Preston produced the performance of the day in winning the U17M shot putt with 14.85. Nathan Young ran an excellent 4.08.9 solo effort to win the U17M 1500m. Yannick Budd won the 400m hurdles in an impressive 59.3 secs and narrowly headed team mate Ding Yang in the 100m hurdles both with sub 15 second times into a head wind. Round numbers gave Cameron Walker -Shepherd and Ding Yang wins in the PV 4m and LJ 6m  respectively. Cameron is a versatile athlete and with sprinter Scott Bajere  claimed wins in the triple jump. Josh Bagnall, recovered from the football season,  produced fine winning performances in the 400m and 800m.

The under 15 boys faced the stiffer opposition on the day. Jonathon Clayton won the discus with a creditable 29.07 and Chad Edwards coming back to form was 2nd in the 100m

Julian Mogg won the U13B 100 by a clear second but the headwind left him a little disappointed. Matthew Mattis made his team debut with a win in the long jump 4.30m, a win in the High jump and a "B" win in the shot and was a member of the winning 4 x 100m relay team. Ben Miller ran a positive 1500 and came close to being under 5 mins. Stuart O'Connell improved his PB in the 1500 by 12 seconds and was just outside his aim of breaking 6 minutes in winning the "B" string.

In the under 17 ladies Zoe Laing had to settle for 2nd in the long jump but completed wins in the 80m hurdles and "B" 100m. Emily Owsley did the sprint double and found that throwing a hammer can be done successfully too. Ruth Stringer ran well to win the 300m and the "B" 200m. Clare Dickins best efort came in the high jump with a win and new PB of 1.43. Alex Bolton and Lauren Brailey contributed to the team effort in the throwing events.

Daisy Da Silva (GU15) in winning set a new PB in the high jump of 1.49m and cleared 4.58 m in the long jump. Alice Grosjean 1st in the shot and 2nd in the javelin proved that throwers can jump by winning the "B" long jump.

U12 Rosie Bostock won the U13 shot with 6.13m and Katie Furniss-Brown the "B" string with 4.48. Lauren Hayman had a mixed afternoon finishing ahead of the Team Bath pair in the 75m sprint but just a fraction adrift of the Gloucester athlete. Lauren had one of those days long jumpers forget as soon as possible.

The next match is Sunday 1 June at Yeovil against Yeovil, Marlborough and City of Plymouth. Another win has to be the target but it may be by a narrower margin.
