 Avon Track & Field League
Bristol and West AC NewsThe local Avon Track & Field League came to a climax with the final meeting at Yate on Sunday 12 September 2004.

The Club’s under 15 and under 17 sections were depleted by a number of members competing for Avon Athletic Association at the Inter Counties meeting at Abingdon. However the athletes present at Yate brought the season to a very good conclusion.

Bristol won the trophies for the under 15 girls, ladies under 17, boys under 13, boys under 15, men under 17 and the overall club trophy. City of Bath won the under 13 girls and Gloucester both the senior men and ladies trophies.

At each match two athlete of the match awards are presented for the best performances on the day. The following were successful with outstanding efforts:

M1 Christian North SM Pole Vault 5.00m

M2 Christina Jones GU15 Shot Putt 9.89m

M3 Tony Hillier BU15 Pole Vault 3.10m

M4 Joel Hartley BU15 Triple Jump 12.32m

There were 15 league records broken or equalled this year and Bristol athletes featured thanks to the pole vaulters and a relay team:-

Christian North increased his own record by 10cms to 5.00m;

Debbie Martin increased her own record by 11cms to 2.71m;

Tony Hillier broke the boys under 15 pole vault record shared by Christian North (1987) and Richard Broome (1993) by 10cms with a clearance of 3.10m. He intends to improve this new record next year.

Joe Cordell, Josh Kenny, Lewis Hield and Ben Vincent improved the boys under 13 4 x 100m record set in 1997 by 1.0 seconds to 55.4 secs.

The Avon Track & Field League continues to cater for local clubs and their athletes. The friendly nature of the League welcomes and encourages new athletes to the sport. It also provides established athletes with events close to home which are intended to be enjoyable for the whole galaxy of ages and abilities. An Olympic hammer thrower has competed in the high jump and 100m for the fun of competing for her team!

Please continue to support the League again next season. If you missed out on the fun this year make a new year’s resolution to be in the team next year.
