National Young Athletes League Midland Premier Division Report
Young Athletes

National Young Athletes League Midland Premier Division
Cheltenham 25 June 2006

Another good team performance which ensures the club will compete next year within the Midland Premier Division. The final meeting in July at Yate can be a celebration of another good season. Cheltenham had the edge over the Bristol & West team on this occasion. Athletes unable or unavailable to compete was simply the difference between 2nd and 3rd.

Match Score

Birchfield  452
Cheltenham  413.5
Bristol & West 374
Grantham  198.5

Grady Wright won the BU15 HJ convincingly clearing 1.49m.

Cameron Walker-Shepherd won the BU15 PV at 3.40m and remembering his HJ technique won the “B” string HJ event. Ding Yang only ever excels and did so fantastically at Cheltenham with a long jump leap of 6.45 metres which is only 25 cms short of the league record. He followed this with 2nd placings in the 80m hurdles and javelin.

James Preston continues to impress in his build up to English Schools. Three fine efforts in discus, shot and hammer although Birchfield competitors narrowly pushed him into second place in SP and HT.

Tony Hillier had a pretty good day. 2nd in the HJ and wins in the PV and TJ.

Sean Hazell was the MU17 glutton for punishment. A willing and enthusiastic team member. Sean enjoyed a good win in the 3000m, took his life in his own hands to run the 100m hurdles and later on run a sensibly competitive 1500m steeple chase.

Daisy Da Silva was top class in the GU13 long jump PB and high jump.

Kathryn Newman and Kim Yeates worked hard to make an impression in the GU15 sprints. Sophie Ward finished 2nd in the HJ with a leisurely clearance of 1.40m. Sophie Gordon won the “B” discus following a good run in the 800m.

Christina Jones won the LU17 hammer and javelin and some way below her superb best was 2nd in the shot.

Lucy Taylor and Jo Chart ran well in the LU17 3000m. A water station was provided because of the heat so the good times would have been even better in ideal conditions.
