 Our President Fred Hill
Bristol and West AC NewsWe are very sad to announce that our President Fred Hill died at 12:05am on Monday 6 February after a long illness aged 84. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Joan, son Geoff, his three granddaughters and his great-grandson.

FRED HILL (1921-2006)

Fred was born in the Montpelier District of Bristol on 1st October 1921. He attended Fairfield Grammar School.

During WW2 he served in The Royal Artillery.

Fred served an apprenticeship as a Toolmaker and worked for many years for Bristol Erickson at Warmley, ending his career there as Chief Inspector.

He married Joan at Liskeard Parish Church in 1945. Their son Geoff was born in 1947. He leaves also three granddaughters and a great-grandson, all of whom he was very proud.

He played football in the Downs League before taking up athletics, a sport he began at the company sports club.

He joined Bristol AC in 1945 and excelled at sprinting; representing the County of Gloucestershire at inter-county events on many occasions, but this was just the start. Fred developed his involvement in Athletics and went on to be awarded Life Membership of every Association that he joined and also become Chairman of every Association that he was involved with. Fred was also a Life Member of the Midland Counties Athletic Association.

He was the athletics correspondent of The Western Daily Press for 27 years.

The offices and honours bestowed are:

1956 elected Summer Team Captain Bristol AC

1961-71 Honorary Treasurer Bristol AC

1967 elected Life Member Gloucestershire AAA

1971 elected Life Member Midland Counties AAA

1974 became Grade One track judge

1972 elected Life Member Bristol AC

1971-82 elected Chairman Bristol AC

1974-82 elected first Chairman Avon County AAA.

1982-2006 President Bristol AC / Bristol & West AC

1983 elected Life Vice-President Avon County AAA

1987-99 elected President Avon County AAA

June 2005 honoured at the 30th Anniversary Dinner of Avon Athletic Association and presented with an Illuminated Address by the President, Peter Griffin.
