The results of Tuesday's Bridge Inn Winter Series Race 1 are now available online from the results section, Information -> Bridge Inn - Info and Results
Well done to everyone who braved the potential rain, which in the end threatened much but held off for the race, making for reasonable conditions if a little breezy. We had one of our largest turnouts with 124 finishers.

Midland 6-stage Road Relay Championships at Sutton Park in Birmingham
The Bristol and West men's team turned back the clock almost 30 years to
score only the club's second ever victory in the Midland 6-stage road relay
championship at Sutton Park in Birmingham. So commanding was their triumph
on the day, leading virtually all the way to beat the holders Notts AC by
the best part of two minutes, that it is hard to credit that they had not
won it since their lone success at Melton Mowbray back in 1979. But one
thing is for sure they will have given their rivals for next month's
National title race a warning shot that they are going to be a force to
reckon with.
From the moment Cornish farmer Kevin Heywood hit the front at
the top end of the 6K lap, they never looked back. Heywood gave Craig
Peters a 25m start over the 104 other teams, and though briefly
surrendering the lead the Welsh and Midland junior champion soon reasserted
his authority to give Jon Wills a near half minute advantage at the second
changeover.
The race was virtually over by halfway as Wills extended the
lead another ten seconds before new recruit GB U23 international Tom
Russell put the issue beyond all doubt with the third fastest time of the
day. This left National Duathlon champion Phil Wylie, who was using the
race as a warm-up for next weekend's World championship in Italy, and team
captain Rob Whalley with an armchair ride to the finish. Russell's time
apart, only 11 seconds covered the other five runners' times that were all
among the top 20 fastest of the day. and confirms the strength of their
challenge for the National.
Almost as encouragingly their separate U20 junior team , headed by Harry Webb and Richard Peters, achieved another first for the event, exceeding all expectations by finishing in the top ten
in 8th place. Of the other Avon clubs in the race Clevedon, led inspiringly by Julian Emery, did particularly well to finish in their best ever position of 11th and easily qualify for the National final, but none of the others apart from the Bristol and West Vets and B teams could make the required top 25 places.
To complete what was arguably their best ever performance in the regional championships, the Bristol and West women's team, despite being without all of their star senior runners, still repeated last year's silver medal effort behind defending champions Charnwood, and, Helen Fines apart, they did it with a very young team. Their top junior Katie Knowles gave them a fine start in 4th place before Kate Goodhead took them into an unexpected lead with one of her best ever relay performances - the sixth fastest of the event. Although Fines was passed by the Charnwood and Telford runners, she held on well enough for Steph Barnes to make sure of the silver medals on the anchor leg. Like the men the second team made the top ten in 8th place, while the third quartet
too did well to finish 15thin just ahead of neighbours Westbury, with Bitton and GWR also in the first 25 of the 70 starters.

Road Race Success
Our top runners provided a great start to the winter season in the Cardiff 10K. National cross-country champion Tom Humphries won the race from an African, who only just held off our fast-finishing trio Rob Bugden (30.25), Jon Wills(30.26) and Kev Heywood (30.35). To complete a good day Rebekah Randell won the women's race in 35:17. Further back Steve Granier ran 41.42. Well done guys. If we can keep this up everyone had better watch out.
In the London women's 5K Katie Knowles ran 17:22.

National Medal On The Fells
BRISTOL AND WEST'S Helen Fines finished individual silver medallist in the English Fell Running Championships. After leading the Championships since June, a bad run in the final race lost the title. However, an unbeaten run of 4 races of the Welsh Open Championships has secured the individual gold, in addition to team wins in the British and English Championships for 2nd claim Calder Valley Fell Runners.
Fell running is a true test of endurance-based athleticism, requiring speed, strength, stamina, technical ability, nerve and mental toughness over distances of 3 to 25 miles and ascents of 1000 feet to 9000 feet. It is to be included as a new event in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and is expected to be a demonstration event in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

NJAL Midland Severn Division (Sun 27th July)
The individual results below are the Bristol & West with Mendip performances at the 4th and final meeting of the Midland Severn Division of the National Junior League.
The match score was:
Cheltenham 519
Bristol & West with Mendip 343
South Wales 60
East Wales 0
Cheltenham again finished first and became Division champions. The Bristol & West with Mendip team finished second throughout the season. On average better than Cheltenham except for number of athletes! For this final fixture there were some fine performances on a very hot summers day. James Preston, Matthew Norton and Hayley Green in the throws and Matthew Norton's landing when guesting in the triple jump was spectacular. Nathan Young's win in the 3000m was an outstanding time in the conditions. Sean Malone set a new PB in the high jump with 1.85 and hopefully he will be in the team more frequently next season. Rob Whitham was disappointed that a lap miscount ruined his hope for a new PB in the 2000m Steeple Chase. At least the barriers were set at the correct height.
Generally this season saw a further decline in numbers supporting the meetings. The four meeting format can only continue if fixture date clashes with the Welsh Junior League and increased support can be assured. Athletes will need to guide the team managers about their wishes for competition in 2009.

Track and Field
Midland Track & Field League (Men & Women)
Promotion to Division One achieved!
This promotion has been achieved against great odds. As with the young athletes earlier, it was the whole team which secured promotion - athletes and their coaches, managers, officials and all other Club volunteers before and on the days of matches.
It shows the importance of every individual when we finish second equal but gain promotion on points scored. Every athlete who took part knows they contributed to the overall success (see below). I echo Chris Elson’s words, ‘a big thank you to the officials - Mike Strange, Pete Davenport, Murray Grant, Bill Kingston, Chris Preston and Martin Travis and the co-team managers, Mike Down, Murray Grant, Paul Weston, Martin Davies and Simonne Lowrey.
I would like to point out that our Club owes great thanks to Chris Elson himself who took responsibility at the beginning of the season to create the big lift-off and who was the main Team Manager throughout. This was on top of his normal job of Membership Secretary.

Overall: 1 Birchfield Harriers 287; 2 Bristol & West
AC 259; 3 Charnwood AC 228; 4 Notts AC 220; 5 Halesowen 203; 6 Telford 172.

Final league positions after 4 matches

On behalf of the Management Committee I send congratulations and thanks to you all.

Track and Field
B Team Results from Saturday 2nd August at Telford.
The team finished 5th on the day although I'm not sure of the overall league final positions but guess that we were 5th or 6th.
After a wet start in Bristol we arrived in sunny Telford only 10 minutes after the first events had started which was a little embarrassing as we were officiating the hammer.
Again, praise and thanks has to go to Alison and Ruby who put in some great performances with support from Chloe on her debut in the midland league to finish 5th women's team. In the men's team Alex Field made his debut in the sprints and Rob Whitham and Steve Spiers had heir first outings of the season with Rob gaining a personal best in the 800m and Steve getting the verdict on a close 100m with the first three running the same time. Elsewhere on the track, Simon Park had a rare appearance in the 400m whilst Rob, Jerry Hogan and Rick Wallis covered he longer distances. Rob covered the jumps with Luke Bailey and Steve West who, with Martin Davies, gave us a double first in the pole vault. In the field Martin, Luke, Simon, Steve W and Rick gave us valuable points and the day ended with solid performances in the relays.
